Intellijel Designs, inc. is a Vancouver-based company that produces a variety of synthesis modules in the Eurorack modular format. Before founder Daniel van Tjin began his foray into electronic instrument design he spent a considerable amount of time working as a producer and DJ. In fact, everyone who works at the company is involved in the underground music scene to some capacity, meaning their devices are created by musicians for musicians.
Cosmetically, Intellijelās modules are influenced by the more playful aspects of minimalism, with Swiss Design being a particularly notable inspiration. Sonically, Intellijel is known for forging ahead with digital technology for modular synthesizers, while still designing devices that push the boundaries of analog functionality. To this extent, they have produced some of the densest modules around; for example, their Shapeshifter Wavetable VCO and Rainmaker Spectral Rhythm Delay and Comb Filter (both collaborations with Canadian Professor Jim Clark a.k.a. Cylonix) are two of the most functionally dense and timbrally rich modules on the market. On the other hand, a considerable portion of their modules expound on sounds produced by vintage synthesizers (particularly those that have achieved notoriety due to their implementation within the techno genre). These include the Korgasmatron and Atlantis, inspired by the Korg MS-20 and Roland SH-101 respectively.
