JHS Pedals PackRat

A classic for the better part of a century, the ProCo RAT has been revised, reinvented, replicated, and now 9 classic voicings have been reconstituted into a single pedal: the JHS PackRat, now available in a spiffy white housing. With that many RATs in a single space, you'd expect this monster to be some Muenster, however, this lactose-free effect is actually the culmination of research, interviews, and 100 vivisections of different RAT models. Remaining true to the analog circuitry, the PackRat uses digital controls to route the audio signal to different analog circuits with a component number of about 261 though 40 different switches.

Carefully selected, the modes each offer a distinct variety of tones. The OG v1 includes a filter control that increases the treble as you turn up. White Face v3 essentially just switches the orientation of the filter control and widens the sweet spot while being almost identical to the OG v1. Turbo v5 features LEDs instead of silicon diodes which gives more touch sensitivity as it takes more power to clip these circuits. Mode 4 is the BRAT, which adds an input buffer and soft clipping in addition to the hard clipping you know from the RATs you love. Dirty is a "You Dirty Rat" circuit, which uses germanium diodes and symmetrical clipping. Mode 6 is called LA, recreating an Ibanez-modified RAT circuit from the '80s called LA Metal.

As we move to the last three modes, we get more boutique modifications to the RAT circuit. Mode 7 is a John Landgraff modified, distantly related circuit of the pedal MO'D and Mode 8 is from Caroline, based on their Wave Cannon pedal. Finally, Mode 9 is a JHS modified circuit that retains the flavor of RAT, while elevating it to new heights.

The PackRat's controls are simple and intuitive, but the sound is complex and rich. If you are a fan of RATs, this is a must-have for your pedalboard and collection.
