Tiptop Audio and Buchla USA have teamed up to bring the classic Buchla 200 Series modular electronic music system to Eurorack format—bringing the iconic sounds and workflow of so-called West Coast synthesis to modern modular synths everywhere.
Don Buchla created the 200 Series Electric Music Box in the 1970s, aiming to provide a complete studio solution for the creation of non-traditional electronic music. In doing so, he developed some of the most important electronic instrument designs to date—providing inspiration for instrument makers and musicians for generations to come. The sounds of Suzanne Ciani, Morton Subotnick, Charles Cohen, and others have all hinged on the unique character and workflow of vintage Buchla designs. Now, Buchla USA and Tiptop are working together to adapt these classic designs for use in the modern Eurorack ecosystem, answering the long-standing request to update these iconic instruments for use in modern workflows.
Best of all, these are surprisingly affordable—with prices better than many similar devices in Eurorack or standalone formats. If you want an affordable way to get a taste of the West Coast synthesis / Buchla experience, these accurate, high-quality recreations of original Buchla designs are a sure bet. A perfect choice for beginner synths while maintaining the workflow and sound of some of the best modular synthesizers of all time, this is an incredible collaboration 40+ years in the making.
