Warm Audio TB12 Tone Beast
The Warm Audio TB12 ToneBeast is a single-channel mic preamp capable of providing diverse tonal alternatives for a variety of different signals, be they from a mic, guitar, or other line-level source. The unit’s total 71dB of input gain and output attenuator mean that users can really push the input signal for added color and saturation without any peaking.
With the TB12, users can select between two discrete op amps, one inspired by the classic 1731 style op amp, and the other by the 918. The former has a decidedly more vintage tone that affords a more colored sound, whereas the latter is more transparent. Conveniently, both op amps can be removed, without soldering, and replaced with any op amps the user desires.
The ToneBeast also features an output transformer switch that allows for selection between two different CineMag output transformers. One is a steel core transformer with a decidedly more vintage tone, and the other is a 50% nickel core-transformer that allows for a cleaner tone. A dedicated bypass switch allows for both transformers to be bypassed, resulting in an 8dB drop and a more transparent tone.
