OP-Z is the followup to Teenage Engineering’s acclaimed OP-1 synthesizer. It is nearly half the size of its sibling but harnesses a lot more DSP power. Users can sequence entire songs then put the device in their pocket and literally move along.
OP-Z is organized around a sophisticated 16-track sequencer that allows for individual track speeds and lengths, with the ability to impart “step components”—ie, per-step behavior. Imagine a dual layer sequencer with the first running at a traditional 16 steps and the second adding per-cycle variation, note variation, directionality, micro sequencing, re-triggering, parameter alterations, and much more. Since this inherent open-endedness could lead down infinite labyrinthine constructs, Teenage Engineering implemented the “catch up” feature, which forces tracks to stay in sync, no matter the number of steps!
