The Portico II Master Buss Processor, from Rupert Neve Designs, is both a stereo compressor and mastering limiter boasting discrete signal paths and a brand new stereo field editor design complete with band-filtered width and depth parameters. The unit easily adds depth and dimension to any input signal by means of extensive dynamic control that unabashedly tests the boundaries of 2-channel compression/limiting.
The Master Buss Processor features dual compressor sections, allowing for extensive dynamic possibilities with both mono and stereo sources. When the stereo link control is active, the first channel’s settings act as the master control. The compressor section can be used for both feed-forward and feed-back modes in order to achieve a more transparent and modern response with the former, and a smoother, more inherently musical response with the latter.
The module’s limiter section is also invaluably versatile, transparent, and musical. Even better, all of its functions have been made available in a single-knob configuration. While this may seem laughable at first, the incorporation of Rupert Neve’s Adaptive Release technology allows the limiter to behave in an extremely intelligent manner, negating any need for excessive manual fine-tuning. Adaptive Release essentially ensures that the limiter responds quickly to transients, like snare drums, and more lethargically to slower signals, like basses.
