Bit Reactor, from Rebel Technology, is a bitcrushing and downsampling module for Eurorack modular synthesizers. The module is a true testament to the power of limitations: its design dispenses with CPU integration in favor of straightforward operation. Simply insert a signal and listen as it is mangled into digital oblivion. This straightforward aesthetic is central to the module's je ne sais quoi, it completely eludes the mechanations of digital processing in favor of a process that's more in line with that of old Atari and NES consoles.
Bit Reactor features two primary parameters, bit depth and sampling frequency. Decreasing the bit depth mangles the incoming signal and corresponding harmonics. Conversely, the sampling frequency governs the maximal frequency amount that can be reproduced. Decreasing this parameter means that the higher frequencies of the input signal will not be flawlessly reproduced. However, these frequencies are not merely eliminated; thanks to aliasing, they return as enharmonic frequencies. In tandem, both effects can be used to create wholly unique sounds that run the gamut from alluringly subtle to positively cataclysmic.
