Puremagnetik LAPS
LAPS from Puremagnetik is a multitrack looper pedal capable of weaving each of its tracks around each other for a variety of interesting results. It can record up to twenty seconds of stereo audio at 24-bit/48kHz. It contains a number of tools to quickly craft evolving sonic landscapes from simple starting ideas, such as its Replica Mode, which mirrors a single recording across all three of its tracks, or "Laps". What makes this so powerful is LAPS' ability to add modulation to each of its tracks individually, meaning one simple recording can be easily transformed into a fluid, layered sound palette in an instant. LAPS also features a Multiply mode, which allows you to overdub multiple recordings onto multiple Laps.
The magic of LAPS begins with its most basic controls: the Start and End knobs. As the names would imply, these control the start and end points of the current Lap, a particularly powerful effect when paired with multiple copies of the same recording. The time differential between the different recordings starts to become more and more apparent with time, eventually morphing a once recognizable loop into a something completely different. On top of that, the Mod control allows you to add even more randomness into the picture. Moving the knob from center-to-right position adds smooth random movements to the play head, while center-to-left adds a sample and hold algorithm for a glitchier, stuttering sound. The Lev knob controls the volume of the individual lap, allowing you to mute or solo specific layers of your sound. The Age knob injects an aged tape effect to your signal, increasing in warble and uncertainty as the knob is increased. From center-to-right adds an additional white noise with the tape effect, while center-to-left is just the aged tape effect itself. Finally, the Mix knob allows you to blend between your affected Lap and the original dry recording.
BUT WAIT... SECONDARY FUNCTIONS????? Yes! Each knob contains an extra, extremely useful function, accessibly via the shift button. The secondary Start / End functions give you access to LAPS' band-pass filter, with Start controlling the frequency, while End controls its resonance. The filter can be disengaged by setting knob to full CCW in secondary mode. The Mod knob provides a secondary control over panning for spreading each Lap to different areas of the stereo field. The Lev knob's secondary function introduces a simultaneous, tape-inspired speed and pitch increase, going all the way up or down an octave. The Age and Mix secondary functions give you access to LAPS' granular capabilities. The Grain control determines the amount of the signal being sent LAPS' granulator, while the Dens control determines the individual grains density. All of these controls amount to a looper pedal unlike any other, with particular strengths in creating nuanced, atmospheric sonic collages. LAPS from Puremagnetik is an extremely powerful looper designed to create detailed and fluid sound with minimal input from the user, expanding any simple sound idea into a treasure trove of audio experimentalism.
