Perfect Circuit Rhythm Series Standard System
Perfect Circuit’s Rhythm Series Standard system is one of the most interesting rhythmically-oriented setups we could imagine in 104hp. Built for sequencing and progressive sound design techniques, this system is ideal for someone looking for a highly customizable system for rhythmic, percussive music with a forward-thinking sonic palette. Assembled in a Make Noise powered skiff, this system arrives ready to get to work.
This system was conceived with unique sound design opportunities at its core: from physical modeling to granular techniques, it is sure to provide a percussion sound unlike any one drum machine or plugin. The Noise Engineering Basimilus Iteritas Alter provides an enormous range of sounds, from deep kicks and punchy snares to otherworldly basslines: with the right kind of modulation, it can change its character on the turn of a dime. The same can be said of the Intellijel Plonk, whose voltage-controllable preset selection and randomization make it a shape-changing beast of a synth voice. Built around a sophisticated physical modeling engine, the Plonk can make convincing plucked and bowed string sounds, pitched percussion, gongs, drums, practically any sound one could dream up. The WMD Chimera uses a specialized granular algorithm to create a huge range of metallic percussion sound both subtle and extreme, while the Erica Synths Pico Drums uses two one-shot triggered sample players to provide access to a large number of high-quality sampled sounds. The Qu-Bit Mixology offers performance-style four channel stereo mixing, and Erica’s Pico DSP rounds out the audio signal path with a layer of delays, reverbs, and other stereo effects.
Of course, sequencing is also central to the system. The Malekko Varigate 4+ offers four channels of probability-based gate and/or note sequencing capable of producing intricate rhythmic structures, while the Qu-Bit Octone provides a classic interface for note and gate sequencing. The Varigate 4+ also contains sophisticated randomization options, allowing for interesting variation to be added on the fly. ALM’s Pamela’s New Workout is a Swiss army knife module, capable of providing complex timing information, tempo-synced modulation, envelopes, and more—perfect for modulating any of the system’s complex sound sources—and the WMD Modbox is similarly flexible, offering two voltage controllable LFOs, sample & hold, and more.
PCA’s Rhythm Series Standard system is a deep and powerful setup for producing rhythmic music with edgy sound design. Featuring additive, granular, physical modeling, and sample-based audio techniques and heavy emphasis on performance-oriented sequencing, this system is equally at home as a standalone live instrument or as an addition to an existing setup. This is a perfect system for rhythmically driven modular music featuring deeply inspired, progressive digital synthesis.
