Arturia PolyBrute 12

Bigger and even more expressive than before, Arturia's PolyBrute 12 is a powerhouse analog synthesizer boasting twelve voices, preset morphing, and an all-new Full Touch keyboard custom-designed for this instrument. Building on the matrix routing scheme that was first introduced on their MatrixBrute and then expanded with PolyBrute, the sonic possibilities within PolyBrute 12 can lead you to satisfying and unexpected places. Perhaps most importantly, the expressive capabilities of PolyBrute 12 put more tools at your disposal to feel directly connected to your patches and presets.

As you might guess by the name, PolyBrute 12 features twelve voices—each featuring two oscillators, a sub-oscillator, and a noise source. Blend between classic waveforms like sawtooth, triangle, and PWM square, with Arturia's signature Metalizer available to harshen up the triangle wave for pseudo-digital timbres. From there, you can blend oscillators and select their routing into the two filtering stages: Ladder lowpass and variable Steiner filter. With their respective Drive and Brute Factor controls, plus the ability to dial in series or parallel routings, a wide range of sounds are available within PolyBrute 12.

One of the biggest highlights of this instrument is the brand new Full Touch keybed, painstakingly developed by Arturia to facilitate maximum expression. Thanks to capacitive sensing, the position of any key can be tracked from rest to fully depressed. Not only does this make PolyBrute 12 capable of Polyphonic Aftertouch, but Arturia has also included a handful of Alt modes with different flavors of expression potential. These Full Touch modes utilize the entire travel of a key to derive additional modulation sources, and because these modes may be stored and selected on a per-preset basis it's possible to discover new and unique ways to explore expressivity in any given sound. Of course, you still have traditional pitch and modulation wheels and a handy ribbon controller for classic synthesizer playing styles. Fans of the original PolyBrute may also recall the delightful XYZ sensing Morphée controller, which makes its glorious return on the PolyBrute 12.

Central to harnessing the expressive power of PolyBrute 12 is its 12 x 32 modulation matrix, split into four 12 x 8 groups. Here you can assign up to 64 routings, giving you full flexibility to use three ADSR envelopes, three LFOs, velocity, aftertouch, ribbon, Morphée, and more! Motion recorder functionality also means you can turn any source into a loopable gesture—nearly any knob or slider, the ribbon, or beyond! The Matrix is also useful for engaging the 64-step Polyphonic Sequencer, as well as the signature Matrix arpeggiator mode.

PolyBrute 12 also retains the original's ability to morph between two completely distinct sounds, offering ear-bending ways to shift your performance in new directions. Think of this feature as a giant macro control, interpolating the settings between all parameters to explore the wide range of unusual sounds to be found in between. Yes, this even includes the stereo digital effects, of which there are three slots for delays, reverbs, modulations, and a new multi-mode distortion.

Of course, PolyBrute 12 comes absolutely stuffed with presets to get you started—480 out of 768 total slots, to be exact. Connect PolyBrute 12 to your other gear via traditional MIDI or USB, and use the accompanying PolyBrute Companion Software to organize and craft presets with a handy graphical interface. Expression is an increasingly paramount aspect of electronic instruments—Arturia makes a bold step into the future of synthesizer playability with PolyBrute 12.
