For turning your three-head tape deck into a fully functioning tape echo for your modular, look no further than the AI016 Tape Interface from AI Synthesis, offering a preamp and buffer feedback loop functionality. With its fully analog signal chain, the AI016 is a mono input and output with level controls on each stage. To get a crunchier and beefier sound with or without the effect, the input gain can achieve op-amp saturation, depending on how hard your signal levels push it. The effect is then routed to your tape machine via the send and return jacks—note, the only way this will work is if you have a three head tape machine.

Once routed, the AI016 can create longer feedback tails with the repeats control and achieve the perfect balance of dry and wet signal with the mix control, and if you want to inject the sound performatively, you also are offered a bypass switch to go completely back to a dry signal.
