Founded in 2002 by Dave Smith—founder of Sequential Circuits (where he produced the world’s first programmable polysynth) and “Father of MIDI”—Dave Smith Instruments integrates many of the concepts and technological innovations achieved under his previous umbrella into entirely new designs. Their first product line was the Evolver series, which implements the vector synthesis technology found in Sequential Circuits’ Prophet VS (originally released in 1986). Since then, the company has released an array of ingenious synthesizers like the Prophet and Mopho lines, as well as branched into the realm of Eurorack modular synthesis. They have also perpetrated successful collaborations with Roger Linn and Tom Oberheim on their Tempest analog drum machine and OB-6 analog synthesizer respectively.
To date, DSI has produced an extensive range of some of the most renowned analog and analog/digital hybrid polysynths available. Despite the fact that the user interface and signal paths are generally steeped in the tradition of classic synthesizers, several models also embrace a lot of forward-thinking features: wavetable synthesis, support for microtonal tunings, and clever combinations of analog and digital components for impeccable sound with flexible control. Additionally, the sonic qualities of their classic Curtis filter (a resonant low-pass design and can switch between -12dB and -24dB) have compounded their aural allure. Recently, this component was released as an 8hp Eurorack module, the DSM01.
