Random Source Serge Medusa
The Medusa Subharmonic Oscillator from Random*Source Serge Modular is a cluster of seven pulse waves which can be tuned and detuned to create rich basses, orchestral string sounds, and wondrous swarms of buzzing beauty. Designed by Serge Tcherepnin in 2023 as his take on a cluster oscillator, the Medusa excels at creating thick spreads of detuned pulsewaves. In addition to a main output which mixes all seven waves, there are separate outs for odd and even harmonics above the base frequency, offering pseudo-stereo output potential. Likewise, volt per octave voltage control inputs for all oscillators or just even and odd harmonic groups work together to adjust the frequency of oscillators.
While simply adding up these multiple tones is great for creating complex sounds on their own, additional modulation options offer potential for deeper sound designing. A linear frequency modulation input is available with attenuator for subtle to dramatic timbral modulations, while generous CV inputs for pulse width modulation let you bring out nasal buzzing sounds as waves expand and contract their duty cycles. Lastly and most importantly, a spread control and CV input allows you to expand and contract the spacing of each oscillator, providing a vast range of tones from triumphant unisons to noise-laden bliss. Perfect as a dedicated drone voice, snazzy lead and bass oscillator, or the centerpiece of systems both experimental and conventional, the Medusa Subharmonic Oscillator from Random*Source Serge is a sound generator of mythical proportions.
