You've seen it on feeds across the world wide web: Plinky is a compact touch synth that is incredibly expressive and offers eight voices of play with 64 pads. It's best to think of the layout as eight independent monophonic synth columns or strings arranged from lowest to highest (left to right) with each string being a fifth higher than the previous one. Any string player will feel right at home with this very musical layout capable of being mapped to one of several scales from chromatic to JI to WT to Harmonic series and just about any mode you can think of. The internal synth engine sounds quite fantastic and since each pad is connected to a touch sensitive low pass gate, the harder you press the more timbral content becomes unlocked. Plinky also has a wonderful sampler and granular engine that lets you use stored samples or record from the input. Create trim points while recording for easy editing later on and you can have eight different samples with eight different slice points per column. Two modes let you spread out your samples across the pads with no pitch changes, Tape Mode, or use the Pitch Mode to assign samples note values which then get mapped to create a sample-based instrument. The sampler has granular parameters, too, including randomization options. This makes the Plinky a no-brainer for anyone who—well, actually just anyone.

Aside from the incredible sound engine, you get all of the expected synth standard accoutrements including envelope editor, arpeggitator and sequencer, mod matrix (which can be assigned to modular outputs) and a mixer for adjusting live input, effects, and the end-of-chain high pass filter that allows you to tidy up the bottom. Designed for standalone, but can easily be housed in a Eurorack case, the Plinky has modular inputs and outputs on the sides that allow for direct access to pitch, clock, audio, and other parameters.

Plinky is a wonderful device that can travel with you, tuck away on your studio desk or mount up in a Eurorack system ready to create expressive sounds with just a touch of a pad.
