Roland TR-1000

Roland has created a modern classic with the TR-1000, a centerpiece for any studio capable of replicating all the beloved Roland drum machine sounds while redefining what it means to be a drum machine. Broadly speaking, you have fourteen flexible tracks of rhythmic sequencing, four effects from a laundry list of options, and sixteen independent projects to compose with. The projects give you the option of having 128 patterns each, while each pattern has eight variations and four fills that are readily available with the touch of a button. Using these options, you can craft intricate rhythms with the sixteen step sequencer, and seamlessly switch between them for powerful real time performance.

The sound generator options on this device are robust: the first four tracks are dual layer tracks that allow you to assign and manipulate two sounds at once which can be blended together or discreetly sequenced. The last six tracks are standard single layer sources, but can be freely assigned to any of the included generators. The TR-1000 draws from its rich lineage by including sixteen analog tone generators that are inspired by or directly recreated versions of their forebearers. Get a truly authentic 909 and 808 kick complete with a wide array of adjustable parameters that extend beyond the original design for more creative options. The sound design possibilities are limited only by your time. In addition to the analog sounds, you get seventy-five different Analog Circuit Behavior (ACB) circuit-bent drum models, seven flavors of FM tones that can be used for tonal or percussive options, 340 PCM tones, and an incredible 2,121 included samples.

If that wasn't enough, you have a built-in 404-style sampler that can be independently assigned to any of the fourteen tracks, holding up to 16 minutes of audio. This audio can be freely chopped across the sixteen sequencer buttons, and each chop can have its own independent behavior and parameter settings. Beyond basic one-shots, you can resample other tracks or use the plethora of audio connections to grab external sounds. One of these connectivity options is the USB-C jack that can take sound from your computer for sampling, providing a streamlined solution for endless experimentation.

Connections are aplenty with the option to independently record each of the tracks, which means your analog generators remain analog, and each track and can be independently treated. The included effects are generous with dedicated delay and reverb, master FX, and an analog FX. The master FX section gives you access to the classic Roland effects, including Scatter and DJFX Looper while the analog FX gives your signal a touch of grit with a multimode OTA filter and a richly saturating drive. The effects section can be used with external instruments, too, by using the external input, and for the purists, the analog effects section has its own dedicated output, bypassing conversion for a fully analog experience.

Performing on the TR-1000 is a delight: the inclusion of a Morph fader allows you to freely assign any of the knobs on the front panel to the Morph, which then applies an offset to the selected knobs. While the track control knobs are labeled, they can be completely customized to suit your needs for each patch you load. Roland has set out to create the perfect drum machine, and whether you're using it to create hard thumbing percussive compositions, abusing the subs with inappropriate amounts of bass, mangling samples, or even creating abstract tonal pieces, the TR-1000 is a machine that will change how you make music.
