System 80 880

System 80 revives a modern classic with the 880, a Eurorack reimagining of the sounds and circuits of the Roland TR-808. This love letter to the drum sounds of yore includes many of the same features that made the original so special, along with a ton of additional functionality. Designed with all the same components as the 808 wherever possible, the sound of its circuits are very similar to that of the original. It includes all sixteen analog drum voice sounds with Accent capability, with individual Eurorack-ready 3.5mm outputs for each voice. Dedicated tuning knobs allow you to alter the pitch of the bass, snare, and tom channels, while additional Tone controls offer continuous brightness control for your bass drum, snare, and cymbal sounds. The Snappy knob gives the snare a more cutting presence at higher settings, while the lower settings offer a softer edge.

The 880 features all the same functionality and playability of the original sequencer, along with some modern improvements. For instance, the paired voices are controlled with electronic rather than mechanical switches. This means that the paired voices—such as the Low Tom Low Conga—can be switched between on the same sequence, giving you access to the full spectrum of drum sounds found within the 880 even within a single sequence. The sequencer can save up to twelve banks of sixteen patterns, and each pattern can hold up to thirty-two steps, giving you a ton of space for experimentation. You can also add rolls, shuffle timing, and mutes to your performances—spicing up the sequencing potential of the original.

In addition to individual outputs for each drum voice, the 880 also provides two assignable Trigger Outputs, which can be assigned to any drum voice you choose. The Master Out gives you access to a summed output of each sound, subtracting any that are already being patched out from the individual drum voice patch points. There's also a Master Out volume control, which, like everything else in the 880, was modeled after the 808 as closely as possible, giving your final output the same dirt as the original at higher settings. The MIDI/SYNC input gives you an all-in-one MIDI input, allowing you to trigger each voice from the 880, along with the ability to use it to clock the sequencer.

System 80 put extensive time and effort into creating the most faithful Eurorack recreation of an 808, and it's safe to say that the 880 goes above and beyond to deliver everything you expect, and much more.
