The Source of Uncertainty Model 230 is a recreation of the original 1970s Buchla triple envelope follower module, originally conceived as part of the 200 Series modular system. Packing three envelope followers into a single panel space, it's an excellent way to add a touch of interactivity to your Buchla-style 4U modular system—and to give your Buchla-style modular a way to react to the world around it.

The 230 features three identical channels, each equipped with an envelope follower and trigger generator. Send audio into the input, and you'll find a control voltage output whose instantaneous amplitude is proportional to the perceived loudness of the incoming signal. You can fine tune its response using the Sensitivity and Decay time controls, dialing in exactly how responsive you need it to be. The Pulse Response switch for each channel offers two modes: Sustained or Transient, determining the behavior of the channel's pulse output. Each pulse output features a related LED, perfect for helping you to fine-tune each channel to your liking.

Use it to extract control and timing information from external instruments; use it to synchronize your modular system to external timing sources; or simply use it as a way of deriving control voltages from the sound of the system itself. The 230 is an ideal way to turn your 200-style system into a responsive, playful musical partner—one who listens and plays along in a predictable (and sometimes unpredictable) fashion.
