Schlappi Engineering BTFLD

Mangle and warp all sorts of signals with BTFLD from Schlappi Engineering, a unique distortion, waveshaper, and asynchronous analog-to-digital converter module that derives complex harmonics and rhythms with 4-bit binary logic. BTFLD (pronounced Bit Fold) happily manipulates any type of signal, with a selectable voltage range for its primary input offering both AC-coupled, bipolar +/-5V as well as DC-coupled, unipolar +10V ranges for processing audio or CV. Use it with audio signals to force waves into harmonically expanded and digitally abused distortions, or input a CV signal like an LFO to create unique rhythms and bit-based beats.

BTFLD features many outputs which impart different manipulations to your input signal. The four squarewave outputs represent the 4-bit binary values encoded by the BTFLD's lo-fi ADC. With audio signals these will provide stepped suboctaves at higher outputs, with unique harmonic profiles on each output. For CV signals, these outputs create complex patterns of gates as the signal values are encoded to 4-bit binary. Below the three input jacks is a stepped output which combines the binary values back into an analog signal, imparting a markedly lo-fi bitcrushing style effect to audio signals and jagged waveforms with CV. Finally, the smooth ramp output subtracts the stepped output from the original input signal, creating folded ramp waveshapes that add harmonic material as you increase the effect.

Control BTFLD with its two panel controls for input gain and CV attenuation, which affect a VCA at the input. This allows you to increase the depth of the distortion and shaping effects with the Gain control and dial in CV signals at the CV input with the attenuator. Create movement in your patch with CV control over the effect, or take things even further with the Inject input. This allows you to input another signal into BTFLD to shape the binary encoding process, adding pulse width and phase modulation effects depending on your input signal.

Of course, these inputs offer the same digital manipulation of signals in the subaudio realm, providing a playground for creating shifting rhythms and modulations. BTFLD is also compatible with the other 4-bit binary modules from Schlappi, adding heaps of new directions for binary logic experiments. As a distinctive audio processor and a deep well of creative patching potential, BTFLD from Schlappi Engineering is sure to inspire signal manglers of all types toward new sonic terrain.
