Mutable Instruments Warps

Warps is a complex Meta-Modulator used to mingle, mangle, modulate, interpolate, and fuse two oscillators in basically every possible way. It contains seven different algorithms for modulation, with voltage control over the algorithm scan. Some algorithms are models of analog circuits while others are completely digital. The full list of algorithms are: Crossfade, cross-folding, digital model of analog diode ring-modulation, digital ring-modulation, bitwise XOR modulation, octaver/comparator, and a 20-band vocoder. There is also a Timbre knob, which provides a wide range of timbral effects per each algorithm, usually ranging from subdued to dense from low to high. The Timbre knob is also voltage controllable. There are two audio inputs for the carrier and modulator waveforms, both with built in VCAs. If one only has a single oscillator, Warps contains a built-in digital VCO with Thru-Zero FM. It can morph between Sine, Tri, Saw, Pulse and Filtered noise waveshapes.

Warps Features

  • Modulation Algorithm: selects which signal processing operation is performed on the carrier and modulator
  • Modulation Timbre: controls the intensity of the high harmonics created by cross-modulation
  • Internal Oscillator State: enables the int. oscillator and selects its waveform. The color of the LED depends on the oscillator waveform When the IOS LED is off, the int. oscillator is disabled and an ext. signal is used as a carrier
  • When an ext. carrier is used, this knob controls the amplitude of the carrier.
  • When the int. oscillator is active, this knob controls its frequency
  • The modulator amplitude knob controls the amplitude of the modulator. Note that gains above 1.0 can be applied, for a warm overdrive effect
  • When the int. oscillator is switched off, this CV input controls the gain of the carrier input
  • When the int. oscillator is enabled, it acts instead as a V/Oct control for the oscillator frequency
  • Modulator amplitude CV input controls the gain of the modulator input. When a signal is patched into this input, the amount of CV modulation is controlled by the Modulator amplitude knob
  • Algorithm CV input is added to the position of the Modulation algorithm knob
  • Timbre CV input is added to the position of the Modulation timbre knob

Mutable Instruments Warps Demo
The Mutable Instruments Warps is a waveshaper/signal modifier that offers various means of making more complex results out of simple sources. In this example, two sine waves from Make Noise DPO are fed into the carrier and modulator inputs through a variety of algorithms, focusing on the rich timbres from the built in "crossfolder." A Sputnik Multitouch Keyboard arpeggiates the DPO and provides tactile control of the Timbre parameter while a fluctuating random voltage from Verbos Random Sampling controls the Algorithm parameter. With the various modulation algorithms built in, Warps can do everything from subtle waveshaping to aggressive, rich distortion.
