Based on the dbx 902, the 520 is a 500-series de-esser that works great as a way to remove sibilance in vocals, or other sounds with high frequency content. Unlike simply reducing the amplitude of frequencies with an EQ, de-essers like the 520 behave like a compressor on specified frequencies, in this case high frequencies. With a frequency knob that ranges from 800Hz to 8kHz, this de-esser can be dialed in for nearly any sound. and the range control allows it to work well with a variety of input sources, adjusting the amount of de-essing from 0dB to 20dB of gain reduction.
