Teenage Engineering captured something extraordinary in the original OP-1. A compact synth and recorder that you could take anywhere, slip into your pocket, pull out, and be wildly creative with while feeling calmly cool and more than a little bit smug (we've all done it!). Despite its diminutive size, the OP-1 never felt small; it felt rich, detailed, inspirational, and had the potential to be a perfectly poised music-making machine. However, after a while, the 4-track audio recorder could start to feel oddly limited in the digital music-making domain, with many posing the question: why isn't it a sequencer?

After being side-quested into the curious visuals and groove-boxing of the OP-Z, Teenage Engineering brought both experiences to bear on the OP-XY. Where the OP-1 was all about playing with one thing and committing it to digital tape before loading up another sound, the OP-XY breaks it open into a multi-timbral platform that can be sequenced, edited, reworked, and reinvigorated. Part of the flow of the OP-1 is in the capturing of performance, rather than the incessant unfinishing that the sequencing road tends to take us down. The OP-XY challenges that inevitability by retaining the interface's instinctive quality while embracing the versatility of multi-part sequencing within the limitations of its form.

OP-XY Overview

The OP-XY is a portable synth, sampler, sequencer, and musical experiment machine. It has a much darker aesthetic than its playfully-colored predecessor, but the delightfully physical buttons and four encoders are comfortingly similar. The musical keyboard has been shrunk down to button size to accommodate a strip of 16 steps that scurries across the middle. The screen is bright, detailed, and grayscale, leaving the red record LED to be the only thing that breaks the vibe of ultimate seriousness. For connectivity, you get USB-C for charging and MIDI, audio in and out on minijack, a built-in microphone and speaker, a MIDI input and Bluetooth. There's also a strange multi-out port that can be configured to be an output for MIDI, CV, Sync, or audio.

OP-XY has four modes of play: Instrument, Auxiliary, Arrange, and Mix. Instruments are to do with the generation of sound. Auxiliary focuses on the transformation of tracks, external connections and the running of effects. Arrange is where you chain your patterns together to create songs, and Mix is where you control levels, panning, compression, and mastering.

In Instruments mode, you can play with the sampler or any of the eight synthesizer engines. Each engine gives you a unique palette of sound generation and a range of four controls mapped to the four knobs to edit and tailor your sound. There's Axis, the FM synth engine designed for lush string sounds. You can push into the tone, the oscillator ratio, wave shape, and tremolo. Next, there's a tonal noise synth called Dissolve, which can swarm with oscillators, be detuned, and be modulated both in frequency and amplitude. There's the Epiano, a simple electric piano emulation, and a similar one called Organ with multiple styles of pipes and transistors. Prism is a virtual analog bass and lead synth that you can detune and shape, whereas Simple uses a basic modulated square wave for great leads and plucks. The Wavetable engine provides smooth morphing between wave shapes, while Hardsync offers a spikier, dissonant feel with suboctaves, noise, and a high-pass filter.

Any of the tracks can also be set to external MIDI, making it quite a comprehensive MIDI sequencer via USB or MIDI output.

Once you've chosen your instrument, you can then play it with the bottom half of the interface that dimly resembles 24 notes of a piano keyboard. Presets can be selected with the data knob, and you can dig into various parameters with the four encoders. There's also a Scramble button that will randomize the parameters for something instantly different. The display is nicely animated and interactive, adding a uniquely Teenage Engineering flavor to your interactions.

Sampling is the other source of sounds in the OP-XY and offers several approaches. You can grab a single sample to a single note and then play it like an instrument. You can develop that into a multi-sample instrument by using differently pitched samples for each note, or by selecting a set of notes. The OP-XY comes with a multi-sampled string section and a piano instrument to give you a flavor of what's possible there, although I would say trying to build multi-sample instruments on the OP-XY with its small display is pretty laborious. The other approach is a Drum Sampler, where you can map different single-shot samples to each of the 24 keys to build kits. These can be individually recorded samples or slices taken from loops or a longer sample.

The process of capturing the sample is really easy. You go into sampler mode, choose your source, put it in record, and as soon as the input crosses the threshold, sampling will begin. You can sample through the built-in microphone, via the audio inputs, or you can resample another instrument track. The maximum time per sample is 20 seconds, and you have basic sample editing controls over start and end points, loop, direction, and tuning. There's no time stretching, so if you are sampling loops from external sources, you'll need to pay attention to BPMs and tempo matching. Filter and envelope settings are applied to the whole track rather than individual samples which is not ideal for shaping your drum kits but are great additions to your sampled instruments.

Sequencing with the OP-XY

So, with all our sound sources taken care of, we can peer into the beating heart of the OP-XY: the sequencer. It has a curious workflow that takes 16 possible tracks and splits them into two sections. On one side, you have 8 instrument tracks into which you can load any of the synth engines, sampler or external MIDI. The other 8 tracks are known as auxiliary tracks and are used to sequence effects, transposition, modulation, and other processes that affect the instruments. So you essentially build your music and patterns in the instrument tracks and mess them about with the auxiliary tracks.

Each track can have independent settings for length (up to 64 steps), speed, gate length, quantize amount, and groove depth. You can record in real time from the keyboard, or use step sequencing to select a step and press a note or play a run of notes to fill the steps in turn. It's polyphonic, so you can record chords and multiple notes per step. Each step will also lock to parameter settings. So, you can add different instrument parameters at each step, potentially altering the sound dramatically throughout the sequence. You can extend your sequence out to 4 bars, essentially giving you 64 steps to play with within your sequenced pattern. A track will support up to 9 different patterns and up to 96 scenes, or chains of those patterns.

The OP-XY contains a bunch of very exciting effects that you can dump onto any step. They call these Step Components, and they introduce a whole range of variations, ratchets, flips and note effects to your sequence. You can apply pulsing beat repeats, holds, trigger ratchets, pitch ramps, note randomization, glide, velocity, bend, transposition, and skipping of notes, modulation, or triggers. These processes are scattered across the musical keyboard and can be applied on a step-by-step basis. In addition, you can add arpeggiations, one-finger chords, and sustain, all of which enable you to transform your sequence out of all recognition.

OP-XY Auxiliary Tracks

Now let's tackle those auxiliary tracks. The auxiliaries are set to accomplish specific tasks or processes, and as with auxiliary sends on a mixing desk, you can route as many or as few of your instrument tracks to each one.

The first one is called Brain, and it intelligently transposes and scales your tracks based on the contents of the sequence. It has an uncanny ability to generate chord progressions from your simple basslines. It's also where you can manually apply scales and key signatures. Next, we have the Punch-In FX, and these are the Step Component reworked into a live performance rig. You use the icons on the keyboard to trigger the events over whatever tracks you have routed to it. There are percussion-specific ones and more melodically-oriented ones. Teenage Engineering is famous for this sort of performance-led interaction, and it's a powerful way to add variation and excitement during playback.

The third auxiliary is a dedicated external MIDI track for sequencing your hardware synths. Now, any instrument track can also be an external MIDI track, which makes this track rather redundant, except that it means you can have 8 instrument tracks and still have room for some external MIDI, or you can have up to 9 MIDI tracks, all on different channels through the single MIDI output.

Auxiliary 4 is the CV/Gate track for sequencing modular or external analog hardware. I should point out that there's a single "Multiport" output that can be switched between a MIDI output, a CV/Gate output, an additional audio output, or a Sync output, but only one at a time. So you can't use hardware MIDI and CV/Gate in the same project. However, you can use USB MIDI at the same time, as this has its own port. It does feel like a limitation and makes the OP-XY less versatile than it sounds on paper. It's also a strange use of auxiliary tracks when MIDI and CV/Gate could easily be run on any of the instrument tracks where they can take advantage of some of the other auxiliary processes like Brain and Punch-In FX, whereas as aux tracks, they cannot.

Auxiliary 5 is set up as a traditional audio send/receive effects loop bus. Any tracks routed here will be sent out of the Multiport audio output (again, only if CV and MIDI Out are not in use) and returned through the permanent audio input. Aux 5 also has a multi-mode filter and LFO for parameter modulation.

Next, we have a track called Tape on Aux 6. It takes audio from selected tracks and feeds it into a buffer, where you can apply tape-style effects like pitch control, speed, and loop length, as well as adding a filter and an LFO.

The last two auxiliaries are audio FX tracks. You have six audio effects to play with including chorus, delay, distortion, lofi bit crushing, phaser, and reverb. You also get a filter and LFO on this track which seem to be present on all the audio-based auxiliaries.

It’s a slightly strange approach to set these auxiliary tracks up like instrument tracks but then to use them quite differently in some places and not in others. It can seem slightly incoherent, at least until you've really gotten to know the instrument, and the documentation trips itself up trying to ignore the connections between Step Components and Punch-In FX, MIDI tracks and MIDI auxiliaries, and whether you are processing MIDI or audio. It presents an astounding range of possibilities, but it can take some time and effort to wrap your head around exactly which of those possibilities can be used simultaneously, and how they relate to one another.

Conclusions

Initially, the OP-XY can appear a bit baffling and perhaps overwhelming in its scope and potential, but it's actually narrower and more focused than it first appears. Realistically, it's an 8-track music-making machine, with two effects and some real-time performance elements, which makes it sound far more manageable or even underpowered. However, there are a number of elements that make this an amazing little box.

Firstly, it is how the sequencing flows, how responsive it is to variation, and how attuned it is to sparking ideas and prompting creativity. The sound engines are excellent, giving you a range of timbres that you don't need to look to external gear for. The sampling is basic but very fast and intuitive, turning any sound into something useful or building a drum kit from unlikely sources. Then there's the power of the Punch-In effects, the modulation, and the helpfulness of the Brain, all of which lean into the fabulously animated display that adds such a great vibe to working with the machine.

There's an awful lot going on inside the compact form of the OP-XY. As a portable music-making device it's really hard to beat. Teenage Engineering has done a great job on the sequencing engine, which helps the music to come thick and fast. It's also superb as a MIDI controller, modular sequencer, audio interface, and effects processor that takes up very little desktop space. It remains relatively expensive, and many may find the expense difficult to justify, considering the range of gear you could purchase for a similar amount. However, it's been out for over a year now, and I've seen numerous videos from people who bought one saying it's been in constant use and that they don't regret a penny. The OP-XY is certainly a premium device, and while it may not do or offer absolutely everything you'd ever need, it is stunningly useful and an impressively creative choice.
