Our Favorite New Gear from Make Noise, BASTL, Synton, & More

As 2025 draws to a close, we're looking back on some of our favorite new gear of the year. And what a wild year it was—from reissues of rare cult classic synthesizers to standalone, computer-controllable instrumenst and even an all-new polyphonic ecosystem from a modern favorite Eurorack manufacturer.

These are, of course, only a modest selection from the enormous number of exciting releases from 2025; but these are some of the most popular releases of the year, as well as the personal favorites of the Perfect Circuit / Signal staff.

Bastl Citadel FX Wizard + Wave Bard

Bastl's powerful and petite Kastle 2 series, consisting of both the FX Wizard stereo multi-effect and Wave Bard Sampler, received major level-ups in 2025 with the release of the Citadel format. These Eurorack implementations of the Kastle 2 units expand the domain of both royal and raucous DSP firmwares, bringing their patchable pin connectors up to 3.5mm scale to enable effortless integration with external modules. While multiclassing your modular's character often requires serious investment, the Citadel imparts no such restrictions, offering both firmwares with a swappable faceplate no matter which unit you pick up.

Designed for both full modular integration while keeping the Kastle's standalone capabilities close at hand, the Citadel series is a fantastic choice for those looking to dip their toes into the esoteric plane of Eurorack synthesis. Pop one of these potent processors into a small case like a 4ms Pod, and you're treated to a full complement of utilities for electronic music making without the need for additional modules. Headphone output, MIDI input and synchronization, and onboard modulation and pattern generation make it easy to craft complex sample-mangling melodies and grooves in the Wave Bard, while the FX Wizard readily expands any sound source you have on hand into captivatingly transformed tones. Naturally, when paired with a more robust modular system, the Citadel thrives in modulatory revelry, providing plentiful potential for parametric exchange and exploration.

Aside from the Eurorack optimizations and more hands-on interface elements for directly controlling the Citadel's pattern generator and wide range of parametric controls, each unit offers a familiar experience to those acquainted with their diminutive predecessors. FX Wizard breaks its spellbook into three categories: Delay FX, Amplitude FX, and Pitch-Shifting FX. These versatile DSP algorithms offer everything from clean and creative delays to ring mod and bitcrushing, rhythmic slicers, and all altitudes of pitch-shifting excellence for low or high fidelity fun. In Wave Bard, stereo 16-bit sampling is at your fingertips with tons of unique sounds available right out of the box, and plenty of room to add your own samples in a web-based app. Modulate your sample playback parameters to craft mangled audio masses and rhythmic riffs alike, and add effects with the onboard filter and time-based delay, chorus, or flanger effect.

In either unit, an onboard clock generator and pattern modulation source allow for a highly musical source of parameter control, making quick work of melodic and rhythmic sound generation all within a single module. Likewise, the addition of TRS MIDI control makes the Citadel a formidable tool on stage or in the studio, enabling a deep well of creative possibilities when paired with your favorite DAW or MIDI controller. Whether you're stepping out on your first adventure in search of sounds beyond the silence of the shire or suiting up for yet another trip around the world of electronic sound, Bastl's Citadel series offers a potent piece of equipment more satisfying than second breakfast.

Entropic Loop Grackle

As connoisseurs of all things skronk, we were delighted to see the release of the debut module from Entropic Loop: Grackle. Devised by the minds behind omiindustriies and beloved modules like Oliva Artz Modular's Time Machine, Grackle offers a unique twist on phase modulation synthesis—the flavor of "frequency modulation" (FM) used in classic synthesizers like the Yamaha DX7. And of course, it packs in some tricks to give it a unique character from other modules of its type, venturing well into grittier and harsher territories.

In phase modulation synthesis, complex timbres are produced with a structure of operators: oscillator units cascading into each other at harmonic (or not) intervals of a base frequency. Harmonically simple waveforms like sine waves thus exhibit more complex spectra when their phase is modulated at audio rates, contrasting with the richer starting waveforms of subtractive synthesis, such as sawtooth or square waves, which are then filtered down to different timbres. And because these operators can be arranged into different routing configurations, historically referred to as algorithms, FM/PM synthesis is highly capable of varied sonic colors.

Grackle offers three such operators—two modulators and one carrier—with three unique algorithms that re-route them in different ways. Add mode simply sums the two modulators together before hitting the carrier operator, Multiply returns the product of both modulators with an added wavefolding stage, and Cascade arranges them in series for stacked PM destruction. Grackle's parameterization also allows for intervals to be constructed from various fractional ratios: numerators ranging from 1-16 and denominators of 3, 5, or 8. Thus, it is possible to achieve a variety of musical intervals as ratios between the carrier and modulation operators, which in turn changes the resulting timbres of phase modulation.

Rather than using complex envelope generators like the DX7, Grackle instead opts for envelopes more typical of modular synthesizers (shocking for a Eurorack module, I know!). Triggered, asymmetric slew, and cycling yield various responses to gates or self-activated behaviors while also being capable of endless drones in lieu of a patch cable connection to the Gate input. Grackle is equally at home producing immense, sustained tones or metallic percussive blips.

Instruo Seashell

One of the most exciting new modular designs shown at Superbooth 2025 was the Instruo Seashell: their first standalone design. Seashell is an extremely compact semi-modular synthesizer based on ideas first seen in their Cs-L complex oscillator. It’s made for musicians, producers, and live performers who want flexibility without losing that immediate, tactile feel. Seashell drops easily into any setup—whether that’s a small studio desk or a full modular rig—and offers plenty of room for personal tweaking and sound exploration.

With two sawtooth-core analog oscillators, a resonant low-pass filter, and wavefolding, Seashell balances smooth analog tones with just the right amount of grit and edge. Its modulation bus, waveform routing, and parallel outputs hint at a self-contained modular world—streamlined, but still full of possibilities. It's a quite capable instrument when used all on its own, or with other semi-modular or modular gear; however, it truly comes to life when used in conjunction with—gasp!—a computer.

Indeed, Seashell is a unique proposition amongst desktop semimodular synthesizers in large part because of the thought put into its capacity for integration into computer-based production and performance setups. Seashell has a dedicated software editor/plugin designed to facilitate high-resolution control, total setting recall, and complex modulation routings not possible with the hardware user interface alone. This plugin also offers access to custom scales/tuning, built-in LFOs, and more.

On the practical side, it covers all the bases: you get USB-C audio and MIDI, a TRS MIDI input, stereo headphone and line outs, and assignable CV I/O. Whether you’re patching live or producing in the box, Instruo’s Seashell feels like a natural centerpiece for modern hybrid setups—beautiful, musical, and full of character.

Make Noise NUSS Ecosystem

One of the most outstanding and ambitious new releases from 2025 was, of course, the Make Noise New Universal Synthesizer System (NUSS)—a collection of modules designed to work together, allowing for streamlined access to complex, polyphonic, intertwined groups of signals. While each of the NUSS modules can be used individually, they truly shine when used in concert with one another. This creates a decidedly unusual polyphonic synthesizer system: something like a classic hybrid polysynth (think PPG Wave, etc.) exploded, providing users access to all of its internal interconnections. This "exploded polysynth" approach was adopted in hopes that users might find new ways of handling polyphonic structures, using the language of control voltage to address the types of structures typically relegated to keyboard control in more conventional synthesizers.

As of the time of writing, the core pieces of the system are MultiWAVE (a sound generator), PoliMATHS (principally a control voltage generator), and QXG, a quad lowpass gate with stereo panning options. Together, these modules form an eight-voice polyphonic synthesizer with some unusual control capabilities. Of course, patching together all of the signals required to make the "polysynth" work would be quite cumbersome and physically obstructive; so, happily, Make Noise has provided the possibility of pre-patching these modules to one another using behind-the-panel "chain" cables, which essentially handle the "typical" NUSS signal flow without requiring front-panel patch connections. Of course, should you desire, it's always possible to defeat these normalled connections simply by patching into the destination of your choosing. The behind-the-panel connections are a convenience, but do not obstruct other, more experimental uses.

The system's centerpiece is also, as of the time of writing, the most recently released: the MultiWAVE, an eight-channel dual-wavetable oscillator. It uses two oscillator per channel, each with independent pitch, wavetable selection, wavetable position, and wavetable modulation settings. Each oscillator for each channel can be used relatively independently, or you can use the "Follow" modes to allow oscillator A to track the pitch of oscillator B. It comes with a wide range of wavetables specially designed for MultiWAVE, including many derived from the sounds of other Make Noise modules. It does support user wavetables as well—so if you really want to dive deep into complex and layered experimental sound design, it's a solid choice.

PoliMATHS is, of course, a multi-channel reimagining of the Make Noise's iconic function generator MATHS. Whereas the original is a two-channel function generator with additional voltage processing and mixing capabilities, PoliMATHS is an eight-channel function generator that can produce all manner of unusual time-varying voltage contours. In the context of the NUSS system, it is principally a way of articulating the MultiWAVE's individual voices via a pair of QXGs. However, PoliMATHS is a capable sound generator in its own right, and can easily find a place in any Eurorack system. It's also worth mentioning a couple of other members of the NUSS family: Jumbler and MultiMOD. Jumbler is a signal routing utility, effectively acting like a streamlined 6-in/6-out matrix mixer. It allows you to sum together several signals and "rotate" them to several outputs, allowing for complex methods of panning, mixing, and general signal distribution shenanigans. It's an unusual module with some really exciting possibilities: check out our full Jumbler article for more info.

MultiMOD, on the other hand, is something of a Swiss army knife. Described by Make Noise as a super-charged multiple, it is capable of continuously recording incoming signals into an internal buffer and creating eight time-displaced copies...great for sending a single 1V/Oct source to many destinations, or for connecting a gestural control source to many nodes in a patch. Even without incoming control voltages, MultiMOD has the ability to generate its own signals: basically turning it into an eight-channel LFO with a variety of waveshapes and macro controls for "spreading" the rate between channels. Though a somewhat "off-book" use, it also makes for a very capable audio processor; check out our full article for details.

As of the time of writing, MultiWAVE is brand new—so as of yet, there aren't many published uses. Make Noise has expressed that, aside from a couple of simple utilities, we don't expect new NUSS releases in the immediate future: they're hoping to take some time to see how users interact with the system before deciding where to take it next. We'll spare a deeper discussion of some of NUSS's technical details for now; hopefully we'll be able to cover them in more detail in the near future. For now, we can't wait to see what people do with these exciting new designs.

RYK Modular Timeslice

Time Slice from RYK Modular is a 4-channel loop manipulator that allows for fun and flexible real-time tomfoolery or precomposed dissection. Hypnotizing, yet functional, the circular display gives you real-time feedback on your loops and mirrors the miniature jog wheel, our main way to interact with the device. Effortlessly scroll through the options, and within minutes, you've created an environment that is complex and layered, thanks in part to the thick stack of preloaded samples that are designed for slicing. When loaded, you can cut the sample into slices, adjust your loop length, start point, and add effects.

Each channel has its own input and output, allowing for a wide array of patching options throughout a system, but you can also use the built-in stereo TRS Mix output for a no-fuss option. The independent I/O, however, is incredibly handy when trying to create new textures and gestures completely in the system, as you can self-patch for easy capture of a track's audio. Inputs are also normalized, so when nothing is patched, you can get input 1 disseminated to all other channels. With some creative loop lengths and effects added, you can easily layer chordal textures using the pitch shifter, spread out the stereo field with the panning and filters engaged, or create your own multi-tap delay.

Creating rhythmic chops is also quite simple: simply load up the audio file or record the sample you wish to use, then adjust the loop length, and slices will be automatically created. These slices can be manually selected or assigned to the M1 trimmer to scrub through them for you—this can also be voltage-controlled for sequencing or for use with other gesture controllers. You can also use this to create a granular effect when using in conjunction with the Xfade option that smooths the transition between end and start points for your loops. Time Slice also accepts WAV files with markers that will allow for premade slice points to exist, perfect for multi-sampling or using a single audio file with multiple one-shot drum sounds.

Time Slice is a deep module that rewards exploration and can easily be the centerpiece of your sample-based modular setup.

Strymon SuperKar+

Emerging as something of a surprise, Strymon introduced their first dedicated sound generator for Eurorack modular synthesizers. SuperKar+ is a sleek dual-channel Karplus–Strong synth that brings string and tube-style tones to life with remarkable depth. Expanding on techniques and concepts from their prior devices like the StarLab reverb, SuperKar+ is a leap forward for physical modeling and polyphonic signal generation for Eurorack. So step aside Rings: there's a new string/ping/ring-a-dinger in town.

SuperKar+ features two independent voice sections—Solo and Chord—capable of up to 32 rich, resonant tones that range from plucky string harmonics to smooth, organic resonances. Each channel offers familiar controls for Decay, Attack, and Damp, plus a switchable model for either string or tube response.

At the center, the Tune and Harmony controls make sculpting chords a breeze: from simple octaves and fifths to more complex, scale-based harmonies that follow your lead. You can keep things tight and mono or spread the sound wide in lush stereo for instant dimension. Add glide for fluid transitions, patch an LFO into Pitch for subtle vibrato, or feed in external audio to excite the resonator and uncover new textures.

Clearly optimized for use in modular synthesizers, SuperKar+ is replete with control voltage inputs—but it also features a dedicated MIDI input for interfacing directly with external controllers, sequencers, and more. Compact, expressive, and unmistakably Strymon, SuperKar+ delivers stunningly realistic plucked and bowed tones in a tidy package that’s just as inspiring in the studio as it is onstage.

Synton + Patch Point Fénix II PP

If you think of rare modular synthesizers, you may first think of vintage instruments from Moog, Buchla, and Serge, among others. Of course, in reality, this encompasses a broad spectrum of instruments, including machines produced in the early days of synthesizers to rather recent devices from the 21st century. Among our favorites is the Fénix, of which a few versions were produced in limited batches of 100 between 2000 and 2010 by former Synton designer Bert Vermeulen.

Thanks to our Berlin-based banana buddies at Patch Point, a limited production run of 100 Fénix II PP (standing for Patch Point, of course) instruments has brought this cult-classic synthesizer back into the spotlight, and we were lucky enough to receive a small handful of them earlier this year for US distribution. And of course, we've been sure to spend a generous amount of time patching it up and getting lost in the sounds.

We have a thorough overview of the original Fénix available on our blog, which should offer some baseline context for what this instrument is all about. Of course, Fénix II greatly extends the capabilities of the first one, adding at least one more of nearly every functional element, along with several new features. The increased density does mean that the original Fénix's parity between control knobs and jack placement has been lost, though it is certainly a fair compromise for the increased capability.

Functionally speaking, Fénix II is practically a complete synthesis toolkit. If you don't believe us, here's a lengthy list to prove it: three uniquely parameterized oscillators, four different filtering sections, analog + digital noise, a ring modulator, a waveshaper, four VCAs, five LFOs, three envelope generators, a delay, a phaser, an abundance of CV utilities, a step sequencer, and much more. Truly, what more could you need?

Of course, Fénix II is built like a tank, and the Patch Point edition remains as faithful to the original instrument as possible while accounting for out-of-production or unobtainable parts. At the time of writing, we still have just a couple of units left from this highly limited production run of Fénix II PPs. This could be your chance to own a piece of modern synthesizer history and outfit your studio with a stunning modular centerpiece.

Toppobrillo Matrixplexer

While fancy sound generator schemes and slick DSP may take center stage in most electronic musical instruments, in the world of modular, the simplest utility functions often define the true weight of an instrument's musical potential. This has been made clear once again in recent releases, with 2025 seeing a bevy of unique signal routing and scanning utilities that allow for creative signal slinging otherwise impossible in a fixed architecture instrument. Taking advantage of askew voice allocation schemes, routing CV control signals to and from multiple destinations and targets, and wild effects switching under voltage control are just a few of these unique possibilities with modular mixing, scanning, and routing. While none of the new tools for signal shuffling fun are without merit, one particularly potent device stands out among them all: The Toppobrillo Matrixplexer.

Derived as a "mutant future cousin" of Toppobrillo's Miniplexer, the Matrixplexer combines a fully CV-controlled matrix mixer with scanning functionality on both inputs and outputs, complete with plenty of creative tools for patching together bespoke musical systems. For the uninitiated, matrix mixers offer a uniquely capable creative platform for signal management that extend far beyond their humble beginnings in multichannel sound arrays. Feedback patching with deep timbral control, complex effects processing, and creative spatialization describe only the outer entrance to a deep well of musical potential. Matrixplexer takes this concept and puts each input row and output column under CV control, allowing your mix to evolve over time, rhythmically switch, and much more.

Using the X and Y CV inputs, you can select individual channels in the matrix to address specific input and output crosspoints in a variety of ways. Scan mode offers exclusive positioning with the combination of X and Y sliders and CV inputs. Stack mode lets you use a CV signal to open rows and columns sequentially. Scroll mode incorporates onboard LFOs, automatically scanning the matrix in any direction with scan speed set by slider and CV inputs. For both X and Y movements, you can control the shape of crossfade control between ultra-smooth legato hand-offs and rigid, clickless switching, with both manual and CV control via the Shape knob and CV input. For the beat-based among us, a clock input allows each mode to synchronize with the rest of your patch, enabling new effects chains on each beat, feedback that wails in rhythmic force, and so much more. A lush hedge maze of modular potential that will have you lost in frenetic patching experiments for hours at a time, Toppobrillo's Matrixplexer is surely the matrix to rule all matrices, twisting together new avenues of musical expression in the hands of inspired patchers around the world.
