Pittsburgh Modular Microvolt 3900

Microvolt 3900 is an ergonomic and intuitive approach to analog synthesis. It makes use of an all analog temperature stabilized dual VCA core routed into a pair of waveshapers that open the proverbial gates to harmonic nirvana. In addition to additive synthesis, Microvolt 3900 is capable of generating traditional subtractive synthesis waveforms thanks to its integrated state-variable filter, which can be configured for self-oscillation if so desired.

The core of the synthesizer makes use of Pittsburgh's proprietary "three dimensional" VCA technology—which, compared to the more rigid operation of most traditional VCAs, lends distinctly naturalistic characteristics to outgoing audio. This is because the VCA removes harmonics as it closes and reintroduces them as it opens. Needless to say, the result is both energetic and organic, perfect for the kind of "plucking" and "striking" found in percussive patches.

Microvolt 3900 Through Thyme Delay
We wanted to test out the new Pittsburgh Modular Microvolt 3900 and the Bastl Thyme, so we figured we should make a video with both of them together. The Microvolt 3900 is a semi-modular synthesizer with a single oscillator, wavefolder, filter and VCA with dynamic response, as well as an LFO, function generator and ADSR for modulation. The Bastl Thyme is a digital delay which isn't a tape emulation, but is modeled after a tape delay, a kind of digital tape. The Thyme also has "robots" which can modulate many of the settings on the machine.
Pittsburgh Modular Microvolt 3900 Semi-Modular Synth
Here are some sounds from the Pittsburgh Modular Microvolt 3900 semi-modular synth. It has one oscillator with multiple waveforms and wave-folder, a state-variable filter, and dynamic VCA that can act like a vactrol low-pass gate. There is an LFO, Function Generator and ADSR for control and a patch bay for breaking out all of the pieces of the synth modularly.
