Mutable Instruments was founded in 2009 by the multitalented Olivier Gillet. Their product line is oriented around modules that embrace a variety of synthesis techniques, rather than solely focussing on one particular area—such as additive or subtractive—or being too emulative of Buchla, Serge, Moog, etc. This decision makes their modules particularly difficult to characterize. To this extent, many of their modules are inherently multi-functional and can exhibit entirely different behavior depending on which firmware is installed.
Mutable’s devices are the result of an extremely methodical design process that ensures all the kinks are worked out before said module is released, effectively ensuring the best possible performance alongside extensive functionality. Sonically, their modules tackle divergent areas of synthesis, including physical modeling, waveshaping, granular processing, wavetable synthesis and more. And perhaps best of all, all of their modules are open-sourced, meaning their schematics, codes, and hardware descriptions are publicly available for customers to use as they see fit. This open-source nature combined with the embracement of digital designs offers synthesists a wealth of exemplary features for an unbeatable price.
