Erica Synths and Richie Hawtin have teamed up again for Bullfrog XL, a new version of their beginner-friendly semi-modular synthesizer triple-sized for demonstration purposes. Bullfrog XL remains easy to use, with additional features like built-in speakers and an onboard oscilloscope making it easier to demonstrate patches in a group setting.

Bullforg XL is an entirely analog synthesizer, featuring a variable-waveshape oscillator with accurate pitch tracking across eight octaves. Blended with a zener diode-based noise generator, a rich lowpass filter VCF plus VCA with an integrated audio delay effect allows you to explore rich and evocative synthesizer timbres. Dual loopable envelope generators plus a sample & hold circuit give you an array of modulation to work with, which may be further explored through the splitter, divider, attenuverter, and slew utilities. The onboard oscilloscope makes it possible to visualize and understand what all these modules do.

In addition to using the included 1/4" patch cables, Bullfrog XL includes a handful of preset Voice cards to get started with making sounds instantly. Several of the cards even offer additional features like sequencing and sampling, extending the possibilities of what Bullfrog XL can do. You also have the option to use external controllers via MIDI or USB. Whether a total beginner, a teacher, or someone who appreciates big sounds in big packages, Bulldog XL has a lot to offer for synthesists from all walks of life.
