DreadboxErebus V3 Duophonic Semi-Modular Synthesizer
Dreadbox Erebus V3
The Dreadbox Erebus V3 is a semi-modular duophonic desktop synthesizer that is great for everything from melodic bass lines to textured sound design. The primary sound generation is achieved with three VCOs with variable waveshapes. Oscillator 1 and 2 can be offset up to three octaves from your initial pitch with +/-10 semitones fine tune control. Oscillator 1 has sawtooth and square waveforms, while oscillator 2 has sawtooth and triangle. In the middle of the waveform selection switch the oscillator is turned off. Each oscillator has independent glide control of incoming MIDI notes to add slewing per oscillator.
The Erebus can act as a duophonic synthesizer, meaning two notes can be played at once. The Auto-tune function automatically recalibrates the oscillators whenever the amplifier is fully closed, keeping everything in tune without any worry on your end. The mix slider in between the two primary oscillators crossfades between the two. Oscillator 3 is a multi-waveform wide range oscillator that can be used as an audio source or can run into the sub-audio range to behave as a modulation source. It features a wider selection of waveforms including pulse, supersaw, and noise. The unique triple ring modulator can be used to ring modulate oscillators 1 and 2 or 1 and 3, providing additional interest before the filter.
The filter is a state-variable two-pole filter with variable control between low pass and high pass filtering with notch filtering in the middle. The filter can self oscillate at high resonance settings, but does not track pitch as accurately as the oscillators. A lo-fi echo effect brings additional space and texture to the Erebus, with sounds ranging from pseudo-reverbs to tape-echo style repeats.
The modulation sources include a dedicated LFO and two ADSR envelopes, one of which can loop to act as a second LFO. The patchbay unlocks a whole host of new features including a sample and hold and clocked switch—for a total of 35 patch points. The internal clock source can be used to clock the sample and hold or can be used as a variable pulse width LFO. Its frequency range goes from 50 seconds per cycle to 2.7kHz, well into the audible range. The adjustable duty cycle is particularly useful when using the clocked switch, as the width of the clock pulse will determine how long each side of the clocked switch is active.
The Erebus is a fully featured semi-modular synthesizer that provides a huge range of possibilities for sonic exploration with a streamlined interface.
