A-198-2 is Doepfer's follow-up to their popular Ribbon Controller module, now with a ton of new expressive and melodic potential that turns the Ribbon into a bona fide musical instrument. Like the original, the module has two main CV/Gate outputs, one set for Position, and another for Pressure. Unlike the original, the A-198-2 offers expansive quantization potential, more CV/Gate output customization, and entirely new outputs for even deeper integration of the Ribbon into a larger system.

The new LED display gives you access to a wealth of programming potential. This is particularly useful for the new scale quantization feature, which gives you a clear view of a one-octave keyboard, allowing you to easily create and save your own scales. Within this menu, the ribbon controller is used for navigation. Just run your finger across the sensor bar to move up and down the menu, and when the controller is pressed, the pressure sensors will recognize this as an affirmative input.

The front panel of the module gives you access to all of your saved scales with one hit of the nine Quant buttons, instantly switching to the corresponding scale. Alternatively, quantization can be instantly enabled/disabled with CV via the Qnt input. This LED display is also useful for customizing a variety of other settings, such as setting the threshold for CV and Gate outputs, or applying offsets to the module's generated CV signals. A-198-2 also contains an optional gate signal output on retriggering, meaning every time a new quantized note is jumped to, a Gate signal is generated. This enables a number of useful applications, especially when used alongside an envelope generator, allowing you to trigger per-note modulation across your system. A-198-2 also supplies an additional MIDI output, letting you easily convert signals from the ribbon controller into MIDI data for controlling any number of synths in new and interesting ways.

The original A-198 module made waves from its intuitive, expressive control and deep modulation potential. Doepfer have outdone themselves with the A-198-2, providing a fantastically flexible controller that can soundly sit at the heart of any deeply expressive performance rig.
