Distropolis Goods Great Conjunction
The Great Conjunction from Distropolis Goods is a compact FM synthesizer and generative sequencer designed to explore glitchy melodies, evolving loops, and polyrhythmic patterns. Using a vintage Yamaha YM2413 FM sound chip to generate sounds onboard, Great Conjunction abuses this two operator FM voice with three simultaneous sequences, evoking strange timbral glitches and shifting polyrhythmic hockets as sequencers fight for command of the FM engine. These conjunctions enable sounds otherwise challenging or impossible to produce with direct programming, providing a palette for the collection of happy accidents and ephemeral expressions.
Rather than placing specific note events in time, the sequencers within Great Conjunction use algorithmic generation to organize sound events. Choose from pseudo-random, euclidean, or cellular automata modes, giving you numerous avenues to arrange evolving patterns. Sequences can alter the instrument preset of the FM chip, step placement, event density, algorithm type, root note, octave, range or span, and scale selection from 43 onboard options. With access to all the YM2413's synth parameters, including envelope, waveforms, frequency, and more, these sequencers can make quick work of generating highly dynamic sequences which change dramatically from note to note, or dial the complexity back for more repeatable, straightforward sequencing.
With its USB-C and TRS MIDI connections, you can also use Great Conjunction to control external devices, providing a central sequencer and sound source for commanding an ensemble of algorithmic musical players. Perfect as a resource for shaking up stricter sequences and positively lovely for creating music on the go, Great Conjunction from Distropolis Goods is a compact FM explorer ready to deliver surprising sequences, digital bliss, and much more.

-GREAT CONJUNCTION is NOT a deliberate instrument.
You cannot intentionally place notes or events in a sequence.
Instead, sequences are generated algorithmically using one of three methods (pseudo-random, euclidean or cellular automata).
Sequencer events trigger the internal YM2413 FM sound chip, and can trigger MIDI output.
The Yamaha YM2413 chip is only capable of producing one custom sound. The three sequencers can send conflicting data to the YM2413, causing it to manifest tones that would be difficult or impossible to program directly.
These are CONJUNCTIONS.
Sequencer parameters include:
INSTRUMENT (choose from 100 presets, or edit your own sound)
STEP (1-32 steps per sequence)
EVENTS (the density of events – based on the algorithm)
TYPE (the algorithm used to create the sequence – pseudo-random, euclidean or cellular automata)
ROOT NOTE (the base pitch from which pitches can be derived)
OCTAVE (the base octave from which pitches can be derived)
SPAN (the octave span above the base octave in which pitches can be randomized)
SCALE (43 scales)
All parameters can be periodically and individually evolved over time.
Most parameters have an additional sub function (detailed in the manual).
FM synth parameters include:
Modulator & Carrier ADSR envelope
Modulator & Carrier envelope rate
Modulator & Carrier envelope mode
Modulator & Carrier waveform (sine & half sine)
Modulator & Carrier key scale level
Modulator & Carrier frequency multiplier
Modulator & Carrier vibrato and tremolo
Modulator level
Feedback level
What it is NOT
GREAT CONJUNCTION does not playback or comprehend video game music files
GREAT CONJUNCTION does not currently incorporate the 16 ROM instruments or 5 ROM drum voices of the YM2413
