CuteLab Missed Opportunities

Providing a quick and easy way to spice up rhythmic sequences and patterns, Missed Opportunities by CuteLab is a four-channel probabilistic gate generator. For more immediately fun operation, Missed Ops only features a single control voltage input for varying the probability that pulses are skipped across the entire module. But it's through a few clever design choices that make this an interesting approach—namely in the internal normalizations Miss/Match switch.

By patching a gate or trigger source into channel one, each channel's output is normalized into the input of the next. In Match mode, this means that stacked probabilities are possible, slowly whittling away gates and resulting in more sparse pulses through each consecutive channel. However, in Miss mode, each channel will pass the skipped gates onto the next one, which means that each channel's output will never overlap with another. Because normalizations are broken upon patching an external input into each channel, Miss/Match will have no effect if all channels are patched, but this does mean it's possible to divide the channels of Missed Ops down into smaller groups.

For further intrigue, Missed Ops also contains an internal random pulse generator. Generating a new seed occurs at power up, so you'll experience a new series of pulses every time you turn on your system. If you like what you hear, there's a reset input to force the seed to start over again, turning the module into a sort of sequencer, at least in the loosest sense of the word. Unpredictability is one of the most exciting aspects of modular patching, and few modules are equipped to facilitate this as well as CuteLab's Missed Opportunities.
