Founded by Ondřej Merta and Václav Peloušek, BASTL Instruments is a community-driven company whose primary focus centers on the creation and production of modular music hardware, including lone modules, self-contained modular synthesizer systems, and desktop effect/sound generation hardware. The company frequently collaborates with Peter Edwards of Casper Electronics and sources components from Brno, Czech Republic, where its production hub is located.
Notably, BASTL is one of the first companies to release modules for the purpose of driving electromechanical processes—i.e., modules that drive stepper motors, solenoids, etc. for voltage controlled mechanical music making. No matter the function, their modules are immediately recognizable thanks to their oak wood panels, though many have now been released with traditional aluminum faceplates.
